You know your body needs that modality, but for some reason, you can’t tolerate it…
I know from personal experience how frustrating this can be, so today I want to help shift your focus on WHY this may be happening – and, you guessed it…it has to do with our emotions!
The Emotional Component of Symptoms
I recently shared a Q and A video from a reader who was experiencing bloating with binder consumption:
In this video, I discussed 7 tips/scenarios that may be happening to the reader who wrote in, as well as a few solutions they could try. One of these tips is what I’ll be expanding upon today.
Tip #5 was how the mind/body can play a role in negative reactions and responses we get from supplements and/or treatments. This opened up for a more in-depth explanation on this topic, as it can apply to any reaction – not just bloating during binders!
When looking at this, it’s great to begin by asking yourself :
Is there an emotional component to this reaction that could be contributing to these symptoms?
You can sit quietly while experiencing the symptom, and reflect on this question. Don’t try to push anything or any answer, but gently inquire and listen to your intuition.
I did this recently with a particularly weird symptom I was experiencing when I would consume a certain product. I knew that I was not allergic and that my body wasn’t rejecting it for a physical reason, and I knew that it wasn’t going to be bad for my body in some way because I had eaten it before – which is important to determine this while keeping these mind/body principles in mind.
So, I decided to explore this chronic reaction. I began with tapping and just sitting with the pain/symptom while gently asking my body (and intuition) what was going on.
As I sat with the discomfort, I didn’t try to push it away. I leaned in and listened, and it became clear to me that my body wanted to keep this pain around because it felt self-blame. It felt like some sort of punishment was needed in regards to a recent situation that transpired – which wasn’t even my fault!
My body was actually rejecting health, and it wanted to keep these symptoms around while rejecting anything I tried using to resolve that health issue. This insight was amazing, as I had a hunch something like this was happening! The cool thing was, just as Jini says, once you get the message you can begin to release the symptoms.
Now that I had this insight from my gut, I knew how I could navigate the situation in a way my body could handle it and still be happy. And, of course, I also tapped on the emotional component holding this symptom in!
So here’s the breakdown…
Any reaction that we have to a supplement and/or treatment could have an underlying emotional component, as we may actually be attaching that healing modality with a trauma we experienced. This could be a smell, a sound, or a feeling from that treatment or supplement that may cause us to go back to our trauma state – and then we have a “reaction.”
This reaction, though, is not a result of the healing modality but rather our bodies reacting to the trauma, creating a physical response! This could be because we felt unsafe (like we did during a traumatic experience), so our bodies label this modality, supplement, or treatment (whatever it is!) as unsafe.
Unsafety is a feeling that can really do a number on our bodies. “Not feeling safe” is a big underlying issue with many autoimmune diseases, and Jini has written and spoken on this numerous times!
So, creating a safer space within us and our environment can help while we implement these treatments. It’s important to reassure our body that his healing modality is designed to help, not hurt, and to remind ourselves that we are safe.
Something that has helped me, personally, when I’ve experienced emotional reactions like these is remembering this:
The situation may FEEL similar to______, but it is not the same. I am not back in that trauma right now!
Child Vs. Adult Me
This video by Jini also really helped me while I was healing, and I listened to it A LOT.
Now you may be wondering why the “inner child (me)” and “adult (me)” are important when it comes to this type of trauma? As I mentioned earlier, we may find ourselves going back in the past. It could be something that happened two weeks ago, or thirty years ago! But either way, if we are stuck in the past it’s not good for us, our bodies, or true, lasting healing!
In this diagram from CBT LA, we see the connection of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. These “behaviors” could also be viewed as the negative reactions or responses we get when associating a modality with a traumatic experience. They all connect! So any thoughts we have then create emotions, and then physical responses.
Feeling: I was scared when _____ happened
Emotion: I feel afraid NOW while taking this supplement/treatment/etc.
Physical Response: Rejecting/reacting to supplement/treatment
The beauty here is that since it’s all connected, so once we get to the root issue we can begin transmuting and releasing the things holding us captive – which is what I have done through tapping!
How can you figure out the emotional component?
It can be hard doing this on your own, so don’t fret!
