JPL’s Carbon Cycle and Ecosystem Group (CC&E, 329G) seeks a motivated postdoctoral researcher eager to work with a diverse and interdisciplinary team of scientists and support staff from JPL and elsewhere in a highly collaborative project environment. The appointee will carry out the research in collaboration with the JPL advisor, Dr. Junjie Liu, resulting in presentations at conferences and publications in the open literature.


The CC&E group studies the impacts of climate and climate change on the carbon cycle and uses various new tools and data (such as CMS-Flux inverse modeling, OCO-2 observations, and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence SIF) to understand the most frontier science questions about the carbon cycle and ecosystem function.


The successful candidate will advance quantification of the global and regional carbon cycle with atmospheric inverse modeling using remote sensing and surface observations by

  • Performing multi-trace gases inversions

  • Improving representation of transport errors and alleviating their impact

  • Improving the use of satellite CO2 observations in high-resolution regional and global flux inversions

  • The postdoctoral researcher will further use the inferred carbon fluxes, climate variables, and other ancillary data to understand the carbon-climate interactions

  • The candidate will present their research at conferences and in journal articles



  • Ph. D. in Atmospheric Science, Biogeoscience, or related scientific field

  • Experience with data assimilation and/or model-data fusion theory and application

  • Experience in the development and use of atmospheric transport model

  • A record of relevant peer-reviewed publications and presentations at major international scientific meetings and conferences

  • Excellent oral (including public speaking) and written communication skills

  • Experience in scientific programming, statistical analysis, and data visualization


Applicants may be subject to additional program requirements by NASA. Postdoctoral Scholar positions are awarded for a minimum of one-year period and may be renewed up to a maximum of three years.
