City of Summerside models AI-optimised end-to-end smart grid system


The City of Summerside in Canada and artificial intelligence (AI) and energy specialist, BluWave-ai, has collaborated on an end-to-end, AI-optimised smart grid.

 

The energy specialist also claims the system can be scaled to entire states and countries, enabling them to move their energy networks towards maximised use of renewable assets.

 

Living lab

 

BluWave-ai has been applying solutions in real-time for two years at Summerside Electric Utility under its living lab programme, driving the global energy transition and the path to net-zero.

 

The company is focused on the proliferation of renewable energy and electric transportation worldwide, using AI to optimise the cost, availability, and reliability of different energy sources, both renewable and non-renewable, in real-time.

 

Summerside’s living lab environment has been created so that companies, researchers, and developers can work directly with the community through its infrastructure. It enables product development, the creation of programme applications and product testing in a real-world setting.

In October this year, BluWave-ai began streaming commands for controlling battery storage, completing the smart grid solution. The commands are based on solar models for the local PV array, building on previously live wind and load AI models operationalised over the last two years.

 

The AI platform is now ready to onboard an additional 20 MW solar and 20MWh of battery storage in 2022.

 

“In 2019, our utility ran North America’s first AI-enabled energy dispatch,” said Basil Stewart, mayor of Summerside. “We invested early in wind, solar, and storage. Our investment in adopting artificial intelligence solutions with BluWave-ai has completed the full smart grid in our community, country, and continent and during the last two years we removed over 64 million kilogrammes of carbon from our energy usage thanks to our industry-leading smart grid.”
