Cop26: SmartCitiesWorld’s climate action open letter delivered to Glasgow city leadership

SmartCitiesWorld’s open letter to national government leaders, which lays out 10 principles for tackling climate change, has been delivered to Susan Aitken, council leader for Cop26 host city Glasgow.

The letter was also sent to Cop26 president, Alok Sharma, to ensure that the UK Presidency can consider the principles ahead of the final agreement being reached.

More than 400 signatures

The open letter, published at the end of August, has secured more than 400 signatures to date from representatives of cities, smart city technology providers, NGOs and universities, with signatories pledging their support of the 10 principles within.

“We’re grateful to all of the signatories that have pledged their support to the 10 principles established in our open letter, and also grateful to leader Aitken for pledging the support of Cop26 host Glasgow,” said Chris Cooke, founder and CEO of SmartCitiesWorld.

“Delivery of our climate action open letter to leaders is not an end to our efforts to promote urban climate action, but the beginning”

The successful delivery of the letter in Glasgow marks a milestone in SmartCitiesWorld’s plans to help cities address climate change, the urban challenge of our time. And in the months and years ahead, we will continue to share ideas, views and best practice on tackling the adverse effects of climate change in urban areas.

“Delivery of our climate action open letter to leaders is not an end to our efforts to promote urban climate action, but the beginning,” said Cooke. “For the remainder of 2021, and into 2022 and beyond, climate action will be a key focus for SmartCitiesWorld, with a regular series of content shining a light on how cities are taking action against climate change and tracking progress on how city leaders are delivering on the principles in our open letter through their work.”
