French tennis star Gael Monfils is hoping that his form will improve on the grass season as he wants to give more joy to his fans. Monfils, ranked at No. 15 in the world, suffered a disappointing loss on Wednesday as he was beaten by Swede Mikael Ymer at the French Open.

Monfils, who entered the match as the favorite, ended up losing in front of his home fans. Ymer, ranked at No. 105 in the world, beat former world No. 6 Monfils in four sets 6-0 2-6 6-4 6-3 to reach the French Open third round.

“I hope I will be able to give the my fans more joy and better tennis in the next few months,” Monfils said after his loss, as revealed by Jos Morgado.

Monfils made a slow start to the match

Ymer absolutely dominated Monfils in the first set as he claimed three breaks and faced no break points to bagel the Frenchman.

After easily losing the first set, Monfils made a positive start to the second set as he took an early 2-0 lead. Monfils saved a break point in the fourth game, before earning his second break of the set in the fifth game.

Monfils then routinely served out for the second set in the eighth game. The Frenchman also made a good start to the third set, having won the opening two games. Monfils led 4-2 after the opening six games of the third set but then dropped serve in back-to-back games as Ymer won four games in a row to overturn the deficit and steal the set.

Ymer didn’t let Monfils make a good start to the fourth set as the Swede broke the Frenchman in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Monfils had two break points in the third game but Ymer saved to take a 3-0 lead. After failing to convert his break point chances, Monfils’ game fell apart Ymer claimed his second break of the set in the sixth game to take a 5-1 lead. Monfils got one break back but couldn’t get back the second as Ymer served out for the match in the ninth game.
