Coach Didier Deschamps named a first-choice side, which was littered with star names including the likes of N’Golo Kante, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe.
Although Les Blues looked in brilliant form, a fact which the 1-0 half time scoreline didn’t reflect, they will have been disappointed to see Benzema forced off the pitch.
Jumping for a header, the Real Madrid striker collided with a Bulgaria defender and, after trying to carry on, was forced to be substituted.
French fans will be relieved to have seen Benzema head for the bench and not straight down the tunnel, indicating that the injury was not too serious.
Benzema was in line for his first competitive appearance for France since a sex-tape scandal saw him dropped from the National side in 2015.
However, this setback could seriously hinder his chances of playing in his nation’s opening Euro2020 fixture against Germany in a week’s time.

Although it will come as no consolation to the forward, French fans will be relieved that they have a player of Olivier Giroud’s calibre to call upon in his absence. The Chelsea striker has appeared over 100 times for Les Blues, and was integral to their World Cup win in 2018.
However, the Frenchman appears to have fallen by the wayside for both club and country. Timo Werner is generally preferred by Thomas Tuchel at club level, while Benzema now seems to have taken that no.9 mantle for France.
With Benzema now potentially injured, however, it could represent a chance for Giroud to reclaim his place.
