R Star Stallions’ second-crop sire Taprize sired his first winner when his 2-year-old daughter Muddy Boots won her racing debut by 3 1/2 lengths in a five-furlong maiden special weight May 27 at Indiana Grand Race Course.
A homebred for Herbert and Darlene Likens, the filly is the second foal and second winner out of the Tale of the Cat daughter Convey. The mare’s first foal is the Likens’ homebred stakes winner Betsdownletsride (by Sangaree ), who won last year’s Hillsdale Stakes and was third in the Crown Ambassador Stakes, both at Indiana Grand. She was bred back to Taprize last year but has not had her foal reported yet.
Muddy Boots made quick work of her first win, breaking out on top early and never ceding the lead. The final time was 1:01.15. The filly is trained by Cipriano Contreras and was ridden by Emmanuel Esquivel.
Taprize is a 8-year-old son of three-time leading North American sire Tapit . The Winchell Thoroughbreds homebred is a full brother to 2014 champion 3-year-old filly Untapable and a half brother to grade I winner and young sire Paddy O’Prado . Taprize never showed his full potential on the track, with unplaced finishes in four starts.
The stallion entered stud at R Star Stallions in 2017, near Anderson, Ind., and has stood throughout his career for a steady $2,500.
