The IOC has formally barred North Korea from sending any athletes to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympic games in Beijing, according to NBC Sports.
The move comes after North Korea chose to not send athletes to the Tokyo games citing COVID-19 concerns.
IOC President Thomas Bach had this to say on the decision:
“They were violating the Olympic Charter and did not fulfil their obligation as stated in the Olympic charter to participate,”
This is just further proof that the IOC only cares about money when it really comes down to it. I’m definitely not a fan of the North Korean dictatorship that’s plagued that nation for the last century, but banning future athletes from competing because of hesitancy during a global pandemic seems like a harsh punishment.
How money did the IOC even lose with North Korean athletes not competing in Tokyo? I’m sure the monetary value was inconsequential in the IOC’s total revenue.
I love watching the Olympics, but damn if it isn’t run by some shady people. And before my email inbox gets flooded with a bunch of messages saying, “You’re not being a journalist. You can’t have an opinion. You’re so unprofessional. Blah, blah, blah, blah.” Just remember that I’m in fact not a journalist. I’m a ski-obsessed blogger with a degree in history that like to write his hot takes to make people laugh on the internet.
Go find somewhere else to complain, Karen. The IOC flat out sucks and you can’t change my mind about it.
