Though the crowd won’t be as massive as usual, owing to capacity restrictions amid COVID-19, there is much more of a normal vibe at Churchill Downs on Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) day. This comes in sharp contrast to last year when there was no paid attendance during a postponed Derby week that took place in September.
Sunny, mild weather is on tap for racing April 30 following rain April 28-29. The main track has a little moisture in it—it was “good” this morning—but is officially fast to begin the card. Churchill is calling the turf firm, but it seems best to anticipate some give to the ground following the rain from recent days.
The May 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) is currently scratchless. Wagering opens Friday.
As announced a couple of days ago, Ava’s Grace is out of the Oaks.
Here are the full scratches.
Race 2: Scratch #1 Love in the Air
Race 3: Scratch #3 Coppelia
Race 11: Scratch #7 Ava’s Grace
