Phil Foden usually turns heads with his on-field performances, but on Tuesday he had tongues wagging for an entirely different reason: his brand new hairstyle.
Doing away with his natural brown locks, Foden slathered on the peroxide to create a silvery blonde masterpiece.
Checking out Foden’s new look it is impossible not to draw comparisons with Paul Gascoigne’s iconic Euro 96 barnet. However, others have suggested that rap star Eminem might have been the inspiration.
A lively debate followed, but Foden has now ended that by revealing the true muse of his fresh fade.
“First of all, obviously I’ve had like the same haircut for what seems ages now, so I thought I’d just try something new,” he said in Tuesday’s press conference.
“I woke up this morning with a lot of comparisons to Gazza and Eminem! It was my own thing and people turned it into something else. [My England teammates] said that they like it, so it’s a positive thing. It’s all been positive which I’m surprised about.”
Want to feel old? Foden was minus four-years-old when Gazza was tearing apart the Scotland defence at Euro ’96. Want to feel even older? Foden was not even born when Eminem released his third album, The Marshall Mathers LP.
Despite not being around to witness the peak of these two greats, Foden revealed that he is aware of at least one of his haircut forefathers’ best work.
“I remember watching highlights on the TV of Gazza – unbelievable player,” he said. “The full nation nation knows what he means for the country. It wouldn’t be too bad if I try to bring a bit of Gazza on the pitch.”
As for his Eminem knowledge… hopefully we’ll get confirmation of that soon.
