A son of Speightster breezed a furlong in :10 2/5, the fastest at the distance, June 21 during the under tack preview for the Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale at Santa Anita Park. While most horses went an eighth-mile, six breezed a quarter-mile, with a daughter of Cupid getting the fastest time of :22.
Both youngsters come from the same consignment, Luis Garcia’s L G, agent, from Ocala, Fla.
The Speightster colt (Hip 109) is in the supplemental portion of the catalog and is out of the stakes-placed Artie Schiller mare Pankhurst. Bred by WinStar Farm in Kentucky, he sold to TNT Equine Holdings for $30,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale when consigned by Denali Stud. He was entered but withdrawn from this year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.
The Cupid filly (Hip 54) is in the main catalog and is out of the winning Medaglia d’Oro mare Wild Mocha . Glen View Oaks bred her in Kentucky, and she sold to Valentine Jimenez for $13,000 out of the South Point Sales Agency consignment at the Keeneland September sale. At the OBS Spring sale, she was a $45,000 RNA and consigned by Bold Arrow Thoroughbreds.

The under tack show was held on Santa Anita’s main track one day after the closing day of the track’s winter/spring meeting. It began at 10 a.m. PT following training hours, and many local trainers remained to watch the 2-year-olds.
“I thought it went really well,” said Mike Machowsky, Fasig-Tipton’s California representative. “We had a great turnout. A lot of people showed up, which is always great to see.”
The sale is scheduled for June 23, beginning at 1 p.m. This is the second time Fasig-Tipton has conducted the sale, following its inaugural year in 2019. The pandemic forced the cancellation of the sale in 2020.
Fasig-Tipton has adjusted two major logistics from that 2019 sale.
Instead of temporary stalls in the clubhouse parking lot, the horses are being housed in the backstretch barn area, in the quarantine barns that have previously been used for shippers when Santa Anita hosts the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. People wanting to view the horses at the barns can enter gate 7 on Baldwin Avenue.
The auction ring will be set up in the winner’s circle rather than the walking ring. This will allow prospective buyers to bid from the shaded grandstand rather than in the direct sun, welcome with the potential for warm temperatures in late June in Southern California.
Times for the under tack preview were very consistent, most ranging from :10 3/5 to :11 1/5. Eleven horses previewed in :10 3/5—four from Raul Reyes’ Kings Equine, three from Andy Havens’ Havens Bloodstock Agency, and two each from Al Pike’s Pike Racing and Kim McCarthy’s McCarthy Bloodstock.
The Kings Equine group included Hip 2, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Lord Nelson out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Malibu Moon mare Malibu Pier , also dam of stakes winner and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) runner-up Coasted , and grade 2-placed Malibu Stacy . B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm bred the filly as well as Malibu Pier, who did all of her racing in Southern California when trained by Carla Gaines. The Lord Nelson filly was a $95,000 RNA at the Keeneland September sale when consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency and was entered and withdrawn from the 2021 OBS March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.
The Havens group included Hip 94, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Will Take Charge out of the grade 2-winning Kitten’s Joy mare Holiday for Kitten . Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey bred the filly and sold her through their Ramsey Farm consignment for $22,000 to Sunset Stables at the Keeneland September sale. She was entered and withdrawn from the OBS March sale.
Pike’s duo of :10 3/5 youngsters included Hip 36, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Tiznow —Soot Z, by Empire Maker. The filly is a half sister to 2019 Sorrento Stakes (G2) winner Amalfi Sunrise and two stakes-placed winners. Tolo Thoroughbreds and Art Tanaka bred Hip 36, who was entered and withdrawn from two yearling sales and the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale.
The two McCarthy 2-year-olds to preview in :10 3/5 included Hip 65, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Maclean’s Music out of the Tale of the Cat mare Bauble, a half sister to grade 1 winner Persistently . The filly is a half sister to stakes-placed Royal Story . Merriebelle Stable bred the filly, who sold for $39,000 to Justin Wojczynski out of the Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services consignment at the Keeneland September sale. She was entered and withdrawn from two OBS 2-year-old sales.
