Transfer route shuts for Wijnaldum as new suitor snubs deal for two reasons

Reported attempts by representatives of Georginio Wijnaldum to offer the midfielder to Bayern Munich have been quickly shut down by the reigning European champions.

The Dutch midfielder’s future continues to take up plenty of columm inches. Wijnaldum will be out of contract in a matter of weeks and able to move on a free transfer. However, it emerged on Saturday that Barcelona were now unwilling to make the move, leaving Wijnaldum with two transfer choices.

As such, reports have stated that Wijnaldum’s agents are still trying to find their client a new suitor. Now, according to Abendzeitung  Muenchen, Bayern Munich were one of those clubs approached over a deal.

Hansi Flick’s side are looking to bolster their midfield options this summer, having lost Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool last summer.

However, any hopes Wijnaldum may have had of moving in the opposite direction appear to be over. That’s after the German outlet claimed they had turned down the chance to sign the Dutchman for two reasons.

Firstly, they considered that at 30 years old, time may be against Wijnaldum. The Dutchman possesses plenty of qualities and his hard-running nature is among his best assets. But questions have been raised about how much long he can maintain that.

Furthermore, they state the wages being requested by Wijnaldum were beyond what they were willing to pay.

Those two factors alone appear to have closed off the potential avenue of Bayern Munich to Wijnaldum.

Indeed, it’s claimed Bayern are in the market to sign a man linked with Liverpool as Wijnaldum’s replacement. As per the article, Flick is keen to bring in Florian Neuhaus to bolster his midfield this summer.

Neuhaus, 23, is poised to leave Borussia Monchengladbach this summer and is rated in the €40m bracket. Liverpool are said to be keen but it appears Bayern lead the race.

Redknapp backs Liverpool stance over Wijnaldum

Bayern’s stance over Wijnaldum appears to tie in with Liverpool also taking a hard line over the Dutchman’s new deal.

Wijnaldum has been a vital cog in the transformation of Liverpool into serial trophy winners over the past five years. His tireless displays in the engine room have helped lay the foundations for others in the team to shine.

Despite looking like he’ll leave, Liverpool have offered Wijnaldum a new deal. However, the terms offered are seemingly not to his liking, hence the speculation about a move elsewhere.

Jamie Redknapp, however, insists Liverpool are right to not be held to ransom.

“They do run the club in a stats-based way and you have to trust what they are doing here,” Redknapp said.

“I understand what they are trying to do, they are not just going to throw money away and give players long contracts.

“That is their model and it has worked so well for them. So you have to believe in what they are trying to do. You also can’t be held to ransom by players.

“Wijnaldum has been a brilliant signing for Liverpool. His energy levels are fantastic but they have a feeling that, long-term, giving a player that much money until he is 33 or 34… they don’t want to do it.

“I am sure Jurgen Klopp won’t want to lose him as you can’t deny he is a fantastic player. But he is not irreplaceable, you can find players like him, and Liverpool will be in the market trying to find the next Wijnaldum.

“Time will tell whether it is the right decision but I do understand what Liverpool are trying to do.”
