Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in meteorology from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and four years of professional experience as a meteorologist, one year of which was in tropical meteorology. In-depth understanding of tropical cyclone structure and tropical cyclone forecasting techniques is required.  Master’s degree in meteorology is preferred and will substitute for two years of the required experience.

These are the job duties required of the position.

Essential Functions

Updates and operates the Blackwell Over-Surface Hurricane Wind (BLOHW) Model or creates a new forecast and intensity model for tropical systems which have the potential to threaten or impact the United States, particularly for systems which have or may enter the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico or may affect the East Coast of the United States; creates and implements new forecasting techniques such as artificial intelligence/machine learning based forecasting; independently analyzes and assesses weather, both current and forecast, to determine the need for warnings, statements, and/or advisories, as well as, issuing current or extended forecasts; monitors and interprets radar and satellite imagery; creates tropical weather outlooks, discussions, and forecasts (scheduled and unscheduled) for Atlantic basin storms which have the potential to threaten or impact the United States; updates existing or creates new Coastal Weather Research Center (CWRC) products utilizing Python coding to streamline operations, enhance timeliness of products and increase efficiency to meet emerging needs of clients across multiple sectors; performs multiple assignments often with competing deadlines; communicates with the director/staff in matters of equipment/procedural problems in the preparedness and dissemination of CWRC products; participates In public relation activities to include, but not limited to, public speaking regarding tropical weather seasonal outlooks and preparedness when necessary; assists with Meteorology program student recruiting and provides tours of the CWRC;  regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined additional hours as required; related duties as required.
