Yellowstone Partners With Penn State To Study Tourist Behavior

Yellowstone National Park is partnering with Penn State University to study visitor behaviour around elk.

The goal of this study is to evaluate how different messages regarding proximity to elk and behavior are elk are received by humans. Based on the findings of the study, the park will tailor its messaging to create the safest and most respectful situation for the elk and humans.

This study is a result of increased elk attacks on humans. There have been many documented cases in Yellowstone National Park in recent years. Humans seem to have trouble understanding how dangerous elk can be. Keeping a safe distance is critical. Hopefully, Yellowstone can develop some strong and effective messaging to drive the point home.
